Although you can directly upgrade to the latest OS from Snow Leopard (10.6.8), Lion (10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8), those running Snow Leopard (10.6.x) will need to upgrade to to the latest version of the OS prior to making the jump to Mavericks.
